Sixteen of the microfilm cameras will be installed at the Newspaper Library each with a custom built motorised shuttle table specially designed for the microfilming (or scanning) of broad sheet newspapers. The shuttle table will enable the automatic capturing of each of the left and right hand pages of a newspaper with a single operator intervention. The remaining nine cameras will be installed at the St Pancras site.
The hybrid microfilm/scanning systems allow a page to be captured onto microfilm and as a digital image simultaneously. They can also be used in microfilm only or scan only mode. Whilst microfilm is still widely regarded as the best method for capturing and retaining a facsimile of a page for long-term preservation, digital images facilitate enhanced access to material.
Micromedia will supply Zeutschel equipment which will be installed and maintained by Best-Tec Ltd who are the authorised Zeutschel agents in the UK.
This upgrading of equipment at the British Library microfilm studios will bring the library up to date with the latest in micrographics and large format digitisation technology. This will enable them to produce the highest quality material into the future to facilitate the preservation of and access to the nation’s printed heritage.
