Users at Oldenburg University Library
Zeutschel has found a successful path with its concept of “book scanners for everyone”. University libraries worldwide use OS 12000 book scanners in the open stacks to improve their range of services and to add value for the students.
“We have revolutionised scanning of bound documents and made the book scanners accessible to large numbers of users with a combination of innovative scan technologies and operating concepts”, states Jörg Vogler, Managing Director of Zeutschel GmbH. The Tübingen scanner specialists have already delivered 400 systems just one year after market launch. “Thanks to the OS 12000 we are now selling double the number of book scanners as in previous financial years”, adds Jörg Vogler.
Simple, fast, reliable and affordable – this is Zeutschel´s standard for a new generation of overhead scanners. “Book scanners used to occupy a small niche. That is over now. With the OS 12000 series we are bringing book scanners `out from behind the counter´ in the public areas of libraries and archives”, explains Jörg Vogler.
Digital Copies – New Service for Students
Guided by customer´s desire for digital copies Mannheim University Library (UB) and Göttingen State and University Library (SUB) are installing new technical equipment in the open stacks. Zeutschel OS 12000 systems have clearly expanded copying options – bound documents can be digitalised quickly and easily and then transferred immediately to Notebook or PC using a USB stick.
Thanks to financing from students´ fees this service is free for library users. Zeutschel OS 12000 book scanners are in use at each of the five library locations of Mannheim University Library. Göttingen State and University Library has currently installed three Zeutschel OS 12000s: in the new building, in the historical building and in the newspaper department.
Modern Information Supply
Oldenburg University Library is following a different, interesting approach. Here, the Zeutschel OS 12000s are used as input components for an information output system that is unique in Germany. Efficient multifunctionality is achieved in combination with Konica Minolta high-performance printers / copiers: Library users can scan bound documents gently and print our their digital files with network support, whilst library staff scan books and journals for remote lending. The system´s costs are covered by charging 5 cents per copy or pint-out in DIN A4. In total, 15 Zeutschel OS 12000s are spread across all floors of the central library and in the science library.
Simplest Operation and Perfect Results
The simple operation of the Zeutschel book scanners was a decisive purchase criterion for all library managers. The most important functions can be activated in just a few steps. The integrated monitor, which gives a preview of the scan and, in so doing, prevents false copies, is also practical.
The scan technology `Perfect Book´, which scans in the right format using 3D surface reconstruction and automatically separates the pages, offers other advantages for users. Unsightly black edges due to false format recognition are, thus, a thing of the past. The book fold is also removed, which greatly improves image quality.
Positive Feedback and Future Prospects
The response of library users to the new book scanner concept from Zeutschel is very positive. Without intensive promotion by SUB Göttingen, the scanners are now used from late morning into the night with hardly a break. Since implementation of the book scanners at Mannheim University Library in January 2008, there have been some 85,000 scans a month. Comments in the weblog of the UB Mannheim show how satisfied users are with the new scanning service: “A really sensible use of student fees! High praise for the UB!”, according to one student´s opinion.
Although libraries and archives are the core market for the Zeutschel OS 12000, Jörg Vogler also sees business potential in other market sectors: “The possible spectrum of users is very broad and ranges from classic official use to the often-cited lawyer´s office that has an extensive paper archive of legal texts and case law”.
